Are you tired of that one guy at your party whose mixed drinks are all rum with a splash of Coke, or that girl who mixes an ounce of Jack with a two liter bottle of Coke? Luckily, we have developed a solution to avoid this frustration. Our Bionic Bartender creates perfectly mixed drinks at the push of a button. Not only does our bartender make the perfect drink night after night, but it also removes glass bottles and decision making from inebriated individuals, creating a safer and more enjoyable environment. Welcome to the forefront of alcohol consumption.
This project required the communication of two photons. The first photon acted as a remote with a push button to publish an event that would be read by the second photon. Electrical circuits need to be complete in order to function, and the normally-off push button allowed us to create a switch for the current. When the push button is pressed, a small metal spring makes contact with the two wires and allows electricity to flow freely throughout the circuit. The LED indicates that the circuit is working properly, and the photon publishes the event to the cloud. The second photon subscribes to this event and is wired to the relay that controls the two pumps used in this project. The second photon then sends a current to the relay that acts as a switch for the power sent from the 9V batteries to the pumps. The combination of the photon and relay tells the pumps how long to run in order to control the amount of liquid dispensed.
The pumps used in this project were DC air pumps with an air flow rate of 3L/min. Air is pumped into the bottles housed in the coffee maker through a small hose, and the liquid inside the bottles is displaced out of the bottle through a second hose.
We calculated that the pumps dispensed liquid at a rate of 1.24 fluid ounces per second and used this rate to determine how long each pump should run. The pump dispensing the whiskey ran for 1.613 seconds (2 fl oz), and the pump dispensing the Coke ran for 4.84 seconds (6 fl oz).
